The earliest known use? As pigment, found in prehistoric cave paintings over 50,000 years old.
The Greeks saw it as a symbol of resurrection, while Cleopatra famously infused it into her opulent baths. During the Black Plague in the 14th century, it became a medicinal talisman.

This rarity lies not just in its beauty, but in its cost: nearly 150,000 to 200,000 flowers are needed to produce a single kilogram of saffron.
With manual harvesting and delicate yields, saffron becomes Red Gold—its price ranging from €20,000 to €40,000 per kilo.
Saffron in Perfumery: A Note of Mystery and Opulence
While Iran leads global production, followed by Spain and India, saffron has also taken root on Parisian rooftops, through urban agriculture initiatives like Bien Élevées. In France, the Loiret region remains a key source of this golden thread.
In perfumery, saffron is cherished for its dark, leathery, and honeyed facets—a signature that adds depth, sensuality, and intrigue. It brings an almost smoky tarred note, kissed with spice and golden warmth. It is often a heart note, pulsing at the core of complex, luxurious compositions.
Yet, natural saffron is not permitted in perfumery due to safrole, an allergenic component. Its essence is now reimagined through synthesis—safranal and safreine, developed in labs like Givaudan, offer olfactory magic with safety and precision.
